2005 RUDDERLESS MATARO
Source: Wine Advocate #173 Oct 2007
Reviewer: Jay Miller
Rating: 90
Maturity: Drink 2013 - 2025
Current Release Cost: $40
"The 2005 Mataro was aged in French oak, 15% new. Opaque purple-colored, it has an enticing bouquet of seaweed, tar, truffle, plum, and blueberry compote. Fat and intense on the palate, the wine conceals significant ripe tannin that suggests it could evolve further.
Rudderless is the conception of Doug Govan, owner of the Victory Hotel, which importer Dan Philips claims is among the finest pubs in South Australia. Govan decided to plant the hillsides around his pub and hired Justin McNamee to make the wines. These are the second releases with each cuvee consisting of only 100 cases." |

"The 2005 Grenache – Shiraz – Mataro is deep crimson in color with an expressive perfume of licorice, tar, truffle, black cherry, and black raspberry. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with layered sweet fruit and excellent concentration."

"The 2005 Grenache was aged in French oak, 15% new. Opaque purple, it offers aromas of smoke, pencil lead, black cherry, black raspberry, plum, and raisins. This leads to a succulent wine with gobs of sweet fruit, excellent balance, a long and pure finish."

2004 RUDDERLESS MATARO
Reviewer: Robert Parker
Rating: 90 points
Drink: 2006 - 2016
"A tiny production, 65 cases, will make the 2004 Mataro difficult to find. Aged in neutral old Burgundy barrels, it is a dense ruby/purple-hued effort displaying notes of crushed rocks, blueberries, raspberries, and an aged beef-like character that gives the wine a wild/rustic style. It should evolve nicely for a decade or more" (October 2006)
2004 RUDDERLESS GRENACHE
Reviewer: Robert Parker
Rating: 94 points
Drink: 2006 - 2012
"The 2004 Grenache (aged in neutral old Burgundy barrels) offers soaring aromas of sweet red and black fruits, licorice, pepper, and spice. It is a deep, opulent, full-bodied, voluptuously-textured red that hits all the sweet spots as it cascades over the palate. Filled with purity, symmetry, power, and grace, it should drink well for 4-6 years." (October 2006)

Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro
Reviewer: Robert Parker
Rating: 95 points
Drink: 2006 - 2016
"A blend of 56% Grenache, 35% Shiraz, and 9% Mataro, the exceptionally intense 2004 Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro boasts beautiful spicy, flamboyant aromatics that offer up scents of blueberries, kirsch, jammy black currants, pepper, smoke, and earth. This sexy, full-bodied, impressively endowed wine is super-charged with fruit, glycerin, and extract. And, like the grenache, came in at a relatively modest alcohol level, 14.8%. Enjoy it over the next decade." (October 2006) |
